How to Choose the Right PPE for Your Workplace in the UAE
A safety helmet, a pair of gloves and a reflective vest may look like a complete safety kit. But the right personal protective equipment (PPE) depends on the work being done, the hazards involved and the person wearing it.
For construction companies, workshops, warehouses and maintenance teams, choosing PPE should begin with a clear understanding of each task.
Start with the hazards
Before ordering equipment, assess what workers could encounter: falling objects, sharp edges, flying particles, chemicals, harmful dust or excessive noise.
Reduce hazards at their source wherever possible through measures such as guarding, extraction and safer working methods. Use PPE to address the remaining exposure as part of the wider safety plan.
Match each item to the job
Different tasks call for different protection:
- Safety helmets: Select head protection suitable for the impact risks and any electrical hazards identified.
- Eye and face protection: Choose safety glasses, goggles or welding protection for the specific exposure. A face shield supplements appropriate eye protection.
- Safety footwear: Check the required protection against impact, punctures and slipping rather than choosing by appearance alone.
- Hearing protection: Select earplugs or earmuffs according to assessed noise exposure and the fit needed for effective protection.
- Protective clothing: Choose clothing for the identified hazard, whether visibility, heat or chemical exposure. These protective properties are not interchangeable.
- Safety gloves: Match the material and performance to the task. Gloves intended for handling rough materials may be unsuitable for chemicals, heat or sharp edges.
A useful purchasing list records the task, hazard, required protection and sizes for each team.
Pay particular attention to respiratory protection
Respirators need careful selection. A particulate filter suitable for certain dusts does not provide protection against gases or vapours.
Select respiratory protection using an exposure assessment and the equipment’s stated limitations. Tight-fitting respirators need appropriate fit testing, and wearers need training in correct use and seal checks. Choosing a respirator by appearance or price alone is not a safe approach.
Check fit and compatibility
PPE should fit the individual and work properly with other equipment worn at the same time. Check the complete combination: a helmet, eyewear and earmuffs should not interfere with one another.
Ask for product specifications, relevant conformity documentation and manufacturer instructions. Compare these against your site’s requirements before purchasing.
Make inspection and training routine
Providing equipment is only the beginning. Workers should understand when it is needed, how to adjust it, its limitations and how to care for it.
Inspect PPE regularly and remove damaged equipment from use. Follow manufacturer instructions for cleaning, storage and replacement, and review selections when tasks or workplace conditions change.
